The Mahathupa – Ruwanweli Dagaba (03)

A Dagaba or thupa (relic chamber) is a dome which is built over sacred relics, the Bodily remains of Buddha. According to the Chronicle, its construction was prophesied by Mahinda himself, when King Tissa erected a tall stone pillar at the place of the future building. Afterwards King Dutthagamini built this Dagaba.

The building was commenced on the full-moon day of May 144 B.C. The foundations of Thupa were dug out to 15 feet and it was finally plated with copper and silver. Unfortunately King Duthagamini died before the construction finished. So the thupa was later finished by his brother Saddatissa.
