Kujjatissa Pabbata (05)

Set in beautiful parkland, planted with rain-trees, the Kujjatissa Pabbata is a charming small dagaba. It has graceful guardstones and makaras at the southern and eastern entrances. Around the Thupa are early examples of the 4-8-4 that are characteristic of Kandian Architecture. The present structure dates to about the 8th century, A.D. but this is probably built on an earlier site. It has been suggested that this was the spot, out side the South Gate of the city, where the ashes of Elara were buried by King Dutugemunu.
