The East Gate (11)

Going north from the Jetawana, a road comes to the site of recent excavations into the city wall. Anuradhapura had formidable defenses. The walls are 5m thick, and they were at least 5m high. A parapet runs along the inside of the wall, which was 2.5m wide and would have enabled patrolling to guard the city. The foundations of the wall at this point seem to be of the second century.
