The Mirisaweti Dagaba (20)

The chronicle records that King Duthagamini built it in gratitude for his victory over King Elara in 158B.C.  He built it in three years and endowed in forever at a cost that was estimated at 190 million bronze pieces. It was the first thupa to be built on a large scale, and at over 60m it was in its day by far the biggest thupa that has been built in Sri Lanka

The Mirisaweti monastery around the Dagaba is extensive and very pleasant to walk through. To the northwest of the Dagaba are some imposing-columns, the chapter-house of the Mirisaweti and to the north is it’s refectory, with a curry trough which hold a thousand servings. The Buddhist Society has undertaken the restoration of the dagaba.
