The Asokaramaya (28)

The image of the Buddha seated in the ‘Bitark Mudra’ position, indicating teaching is a powerful yet serene image, that ranks amongst the best sculptures in Sri Lanka. At the entrance to the image house is a moon stone, which is the same date as the figure, about 10th century. There also remains a bath, a Dagabha and a long columned building that was a nunnery, with excellent guardstones. The ground plan of the Asokarama shows it to be another group of outer monasteries.
